What are NAICS codes?

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is the standard the US government uses to classify businesses by industry. Every federal contract opportunity on SAM.gov carries one NAICS code, chosen by the contracting officer, which also sets the size standard a business must meet to bid on a small-business set-aside.

Codes run from two to six digits. The first two digits are the sector (54 is professional, scientific and technical services), and each further digit narrows it down, to the six-digit industry (541511 is custom computer programming). Browsing by code finds every notice in your line of work, whatever words the agency used in the title.
